What it actually does
Import a track, not a route request
GPX files from the Trans Euro Trail, a club ride or a forum link. Files or URLs, one track or forty, reviewed in a preview before anything is saved.
The line is the product
The map is drained of colour so the route owns every saturated hue, and the route never changes colour under you. Straying is signalled by a leader line, a banner and a label — additions, not mutations.
Turns derived from the shape
A GPX has no turn instructions, so they are computed from the geometry. Position is smoothed with a Kalman filter, because tree cover and canyon walls throw 30-metre spikes and a wobbling dot destroys trust.
Offline by design, not as a mode
Tracks live on the phone. Vector tiles are read straight out of a PMTiles archive over HTTP range requests, so the same map works from a downloaded file in a valley with no bars.
Who it is for
Riders following a known line offroad — TET stages, rally roadbooks turned into tracks, a route somebody shared. Not commuters, not road navigation, and not people who want the app to invent a way around the closed bridge. If you want turn-by-turn to a postcode, any phone already does that better.

The API
api.trailrideapp.com is deliberately tiny: it tells the app where the current tile archives are, and it will cut offline corridors around a track. It never sees a ride.
